Novel Presents Nina Kraviz & Aurora Halal (Live)
Sun 8th Mar
Brown Alley

On the eve of Labour Day, Novel will host world-renowned artists Nina Kraviz and Aurora Halal for their long-overdue Melbourne club shows. Prepare yourself to be treated to a duo of world-class techno practitioners…

If anyone can stake a claim for being techno's biggest drawcard, it would be Russia's most famous dance music export, Nina Kraviz. She is one of the most talked-about names in contemporary dance music, a popular dance identity who has transmogrified the underground scene by becoming a social and cultural identity. It's easy to get sidetracked by the media attention following Kraviz, but for those tuned in to the nuances of dance music know she is a once-in-a-generation artist and a true tastemaker. For proof, look no further than her Trip imprint. It is littered with productions that sounds like it was sourced from a distant future where exceptional artists operate on as yet undiscovered frequencies. The label is fresh, exciting and increasingly impressive. Her DJ sets can be a musical voyage bordering on the fantastical, they can include everything from forgotten classics to modern techno rooted in experimental layers. Don't miss out on the opportunity to see her first Australian club performance since 2013. Nina Kraviz will go down as a zeitgeist defining artist and she deserves your attention.

Joining Nina Kraviz will be the shadowy and psychedelic sounds of New Yorker Aurora Halal. As the creator of influential Brooklyn party series Mutual Dreaming and the Sustain-Release event, Aurora has positioned herself as one of America's foremost authorities of imaginative and unique techno. Her distinctive sound has found favour with forward-thinking global events including Unsound, Atonal and Nachtdigital and regular bookings at worldwide clubs including Berghain. An Aurora Halal performance is coloured with a hazy sensuality and metallic dance floor intensity that's at turns playful, dark, acidic, hard, euphoric and emotionally vulnerable. Or as she explained to Resident Advisor in her Breaking Through feature: “I want evocative images, hypnotic motifs—overwhelming surges of feelings, risky combinations and even uncomfortable moments, or else I’d rather go home.” This will be Aurora Halal’s first Australian show in three years.

Nina Kraviz

Nina Kraviz is a famous Russian dentist. She hung up her drill some time ago to collect records, make music and travel the world. Her career is so varied that it’s hard to define a particular Kraviz sound: for her it’s the passion, the spirit, the immediacy of the music she plays and artists she champions. Her first artist album was the self-titled 'Nina Kraviz' and she has two expansive, extraordinary mix CDs under her belt for fabric and DJ Kicks. In the last few years she’s focused on releasing her music and that of her fellow travellers on her two labels трип and Galaxiid. The DIY spirit of the labels manifests at small intimate raves in unusual locations around the globe, and occasionally on trip’s to the moon. These трип parties are an antidote to her regular performances at the worlds most revered festivals and clubs. She prefers the personal over the impersonal, conveying the many facets of her musical passions on the radio and often giving talks for students from all walks of life. She likes her burger medium rare, her wine red, her sweatshirts roomy and her tea hot.
